I used to work for the legacy consulting firms. I liked the work and I loved my clients. But I didn’t like the environment: they followed the traditional model of fixed salaries, billable quotas and limited time off. The incentives for owners and non-owners were way out of sync.
I didn’t want to live like that anymore so, when I started the firm in 1991, I made it completely flexible. All of our employment offers say: “As long as you can meet our clients’ needs, you may work when you like, where you like and as much as you like.”
With that simple change, we made life better for our team and our clients. Everyone is paid by the hour, so we’re all rewarded immediately for extra work. When our clients say “jump” we gladly say “how high?”
And there’s more. We contribute a fixed percentage of each year’s profits to a bonus and profit sharing pool, so our whole team has a strong incentive to be efficient, productive and successful.
Many business owners would call this “giving away the store”. Maybe it is, but you know what? It’s worked wonderfully. We’ve been in business for over 20 years now – and we’re still growing, doing great work and having fun.
We’re not going back to the old model. We’d rather have two people working 40 hours a week than one working 80 hours. We can respond better to our clients’ needs because we aren’t already overloaded with day-to-day work.
